Monday, 3 August 2026 - A morning visit to the spectacular Skógafoss waterfall, where the thunderous 200-foot drop and constant rainbows made it difficult to leave. In the afternoon we headed deep into the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark, photographing rugged volcanic mountains, Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the Múlakvísl River before staying late to capture the sunset and rising moon.

iceland2026 — Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country, with a width of 82 feet and a drop of 200 feet. According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall.

We had a great lunch at a restaurant overlooking the falls.

iceland2026 — In the afternoon we ventured into the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark. We would wind our way through the park to watch sunset at the very end of the road.

iceland2026 — Mýrdalsjökull glacier on top of the Katla Volcano. The last major eruption was in 1918.

iceland2026 — The hills are covered in grasses that attract sheep. There were two or three sheep now and then across the park. We wondered how their owners were ever going to round them up in this very remote and rugged area.

Later we would learn that the community gathers and heads into the mountains to round up the sheep in late September.

iceland2026 — This curious little plant caught my eye. It was growing in the volcanic soil with nothing around it.

iceland2026 — The Múlakvísl river which flows from the Mýrdalsjökull glacier which we are driving toward.

iceland2026 — At the furthest point was a campground. We parked and then hiked a short way along a small stream into the mountains looking for a good composition.

The goal was a nice water shot of the stream with the rugged peaks in the background.

We head back to the hotel. It is well after 0100 in the morning before we get to bed.
