We stopped for gas in San Diego and while we were inside a couple of rough looking Harley
riders rode up to get gas as well.
There was a bit of tension between the riders of Japanese bikes vs. the American brand, so we were a
bit nervous. We were hesitant to head out to our bikes, which were now under some intense scrutiny
from the bikers. Not to worry, they greeted us and were inquisitive about John's shaft-driven bike.
We entered Arizona crossing the Colorado River in Yuma.
A much more photogenic sign past the city center.
We had several more hours of very hot riding to reach Cal's parents' home in Paradise Vally, AZ (Phoenix).
Riding shirtless we arrived in time for a dinner party Cal's parents were hosting in our honor. We
quickly cleaned up and joined the party.
We spent an extra day in Paradise Valley.
Heading north we stopped to visit Grand Canyon National Park.
An odd picture of the Grand Canyon and John's head just making it into the picture.
Navajo Point on the South Rim is beautiful. It is fun to see this photograph and then look at what
technology captures 43 years later at the same lookout. When Cal visited the south rim
during a photography trip
.
Another funny shot - this time Cal is trying to get out of the picture.
At the end of the day we camped at the South Rim.
The next day we headed east on I40 stopping at the Petrified Forest National Park.
This is a picture of a petrified log - and a woman in uniform.
Adjacent to the Petrified Forest is the Painted Desert National Park
Vibrant colors of the earth make the desert look painted.
We entered New Mexico and then turned north to Santa Fe, NM to spend the night with Cal's Uncle Bud,
Charles E Holman II.
