We left Marrakesh and headed south into the High Atlas for two days.
Town on the hillside - the
moon just over the horizon. Again, the villages are along the river where crops can grow. In this part of the
country walnuts are predominant.
A walnut tree
Apples are also a big crop - here are apple crates stacked for a future harvest.
We stopped in the village of Imlil and left the van for a guided hike up the mountain.
The leaves were
just turning along the trail.
A man irrigating his orchard.
In the small valley were seven villages some up high on the hillside and others in the valley.
After many generations the amount of land passed down becomes smaller and smaller. This tree is marked to
indicate its owner - the family might be down to handing down specific trees on the land.
Beautiful trees in the midday light.
We met several people going up and down the trail - here is a man and his donkey headed down.
A village nestled in the High Atlas mountains - we will walk down the road which cuts across the near mountain.
Virginia Ann and Cal happy for the brief stop on our upward hike to take in the view and make a picture.
As we approach the mountain village of Aroumd we meet some men headed down to Imlil.
A little elderly lady (who did not want her picture taken) headed up the road passes a man coming down.
A very old window.
Our Amazigh guide took us to his home in Aroumd. We were introduced to his wife and the youngest daughter then served
tea - mint tea. The tea and walnuts were delicious.
From our rooftop restaurant a view down the valley with several of the villages visible.
A street in Aroumd.
Sun through a walnut tree
A small stream coming down the mountain. Immediately the water is divertted into irrigation channels.
Cal and Virginia Ann in front of the small stream.
The town of Tamatert which is where we were picked up by the van after our hike.
From our hotel - sunset on Jbel Toubkal, the tallest of the High Atlas mountains.
