Kumquats (or Mandarins) and Mangosteen - which contains no seeds - not sure if we ever had any.
southeastasia2023
Rose Apples - originated in Indonesia - you eat it without peeling. Pretty sure we did not have this fruit.
southeastasia2023
We would visit many temples today - the first is a combination of royal residence and temples at the Grand Palace.

The Royal Pantheon or Prasat Phra Dhepbidorn in Thai, a pavilion having a prang (tall richly carved tower-like spire) summit, it is a mixture of Thai-Khmer style. It was constructed by King Rama IV in 1856.

This kinnari is a half woman, half horse guardian in Thai lore. This golden statue guards the Wat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Golden Buddha at the Grand Palace.

Detail of one of eight Phra Asadha Maha Chedi prang or towers - each tower is dedicated to a certain Buddhist concept.
southeastasia2023
The gallery that surrounds the temples holds murals which tell the Ramakien Story. This story is the battle between Tosakanth who is the King of demons and King Rama who is human.

Tosakanth kidnaps the Queen of King Rama whose name is Sida, and takes her to Longka city, where he hopes that she will fall in love with him, but alas she does not.

There are 178 panels to the story - here Hanuman volunteered to guard him by enlarging himself, encircled the pavilion with his arms, and keep the royal pavilion in his mouth.
southeastasia2023
In the battle Tosakanth asks his innumerable relatives and friends to join him, whereas King Rama has a monkey army and the great monkey warriors under his command. Finally, Tosakanth is defeated and King Rama takes Sida back.
southeastasia2023
A little bird-man holding up a platform at the Phra Ubosot or The Chapel of The Emerald Buddha.
southeastasia2023
The Emerald Buddha is a Buddha image that was carved from a block of jasper. The statue is a little over 2 feet high and sits in the attitude of meditation. The Emerald Buddha is of northern Thai workmanship and was probably made in the 15th century, and regarded as the most important Buddha image in Thailand.

The statue is covered in its winter gold cloak.

We were not allowed to take pictures inside the temple so this picture is taken from outside through an open door.

southeastasia2023
Phra Thinang Dusit Maha Prasat - royal throne hall. Every aspect of the exterior decoration of the throne hall is imbued with symbolism. The hall is built in the shape of a tall mountain to represent Mount Meru, the mythological center of the universe.

The spire is supported by garudas on its four sides; as well as being the symbol of kingship, the garuda represents the mythical creatures of the Himavanta forest surrounding Mount Meru.
southeastasia2023

southeastasia2023
A pretty wall with colorful flowers.
southeastasia2023
It was a short walk to Wat Pho known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

Wat Pho is one of Bangkok's oldest temples. It existed before Bangkok was established as the capital by King Rama I in the mid-16th century.

The reclining Buddha is 150 feet long and 50 feet high - it is huge. The figure has a brick core, which was modeled and shaped with plaster, then gilded. It was added to the complex in 1832.
southeastasia2023
The soles of the feet of the Buddha are 10 feet high and 15 feet long, and inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
southeastasia2023
RThe inlaid feet are each divided into 108 arranged panels, displaying the auspicious symbols by which Buddha can be identified, such as flowers, dancers, white elephants, tigers, and altar accessories.
southeastasia2023
Murals line the temple walls
southeastasia2023
Seventy-one small chedis were built by Rama III called Phra Chedi Rai. The chedis of smaller size contain the ashes of the royal family, and 20 slightly larger ones clustered in groups of five contain the relics of Buddha.
southeastasia2023
There are over 400 images and statues of Buddha in the complex.
southeastasia2023

Phra Ubosot is the ordination hall, the main hall used for performing Buddhist rituals, and the most sacred building of the complex. The building was dedicated in 1791.

In the center is a gold and crystal three-tiered pedestal topped with a gilded Buddha made of a gold-copper alloy, and over the statue is a nine-tiered umbrella representing the authority of Thailand.
southeastasia2023
Lunch was at a restaurant by the Chao Phraya River. On the other side of the river was Wat Arun which we would visit after lunch.
southeastasia2023
Walking through the allys to the river dock we passed this shrine.
southeastasia2023
Once on the river we could look back at the Grand Palace.
southeastasia2023
We passed Wichai Prasit Fort on the corner of the river and a canal. It is the oldest fort in Bangkok and is still in use by the Royal Thai Navy.
southeastasia2023
Our boat ride through the canals of Bangkok was not very fun/relaxing/photogenic we were in a narrow boat which could hold 20 (only 5 of us) with a V8 engine going 30 miles per hour down a canal. Awful, waste of time.

We would slow for some reason and we could take pictures of the homes along the canal.
southeastasia2023
Cute little gate on the dock.
southeastasia2023
The homes were built a considerable way into the water.
southeastasia2023
Puppets at a stop on our mad dash journey. We visited a series of stores, a temple, and their performance area.
southeastasia2023
Masks for dancers.
southeastasia2023
There were many sightings of monitor lizards along the canals - after failing to capture a picture we requested the boat slow or stop when we saw the next one. They can grow up to 6 feet and weigh over 100 pounds.
southeastasia2023
This is a smaller monitor lizard. We saw several slip into the water where they could swim.
southeastasia2023
What we were riding in - we are stopped waiting to enter a lock - we would spend about an hour waiting for two locks.

The worst time of the entire trip - maybe of all or travels.
southeastasia2023
The boat dropped us off at Wat Arun or the "Temple of Dawn" a Buddhist temple.

The temple has been here since the 17th century, however, the tall prang (spire) was built in the early 19th century.

The central prang symbolises Mount Meru of the Hindu cosmology. The satellite prang are devoted to the wind god, Phra Phai.
southeastasia2023
There are gods and men holding up the prang.
southeastasia2023

A small guard at one of the entrance stairs.
southeastasia2023
Immediately we noticed many women dressed formally - as if in a wedding party. They were not dressed for anything special, instead they rent the formal Thai costume at stores around the temple to wear to the temple and have their picture taken. And our guide informed us that they were mainly Vietnamese tourists.
southeastasia2023
One last view of the central spire with Indra on the three-headed-elephant.
