As we waited for the boat on the Saigon River we were across from the statue of Trần Hưng Đạo.
Trần Hưng Đạo is a national hero as he successfully stopped the
Mongol armies from capturing Vietnam in 1288 at the Battle of Bạch Đằng River.
Pretty clever - he impeded long spikes tipped in iron in the river where the Mongols were expected to travel.
The Mongol ships passed over them at high tide but as the tide went out they were trapped and destroyed.
We boarded a boat for a trip up the Saigon River.
The Vietcombank Tower is the 7th tallest building in
Vietnam at 35 stories.
Landmark 81 is the tallest building in Vietnam - and was the building photographed last night from the Majestic
bar. It will be in a few more pictures later on today.
At 81 stories it is the 17th tallest building
in the world.
On the river's edge were several houseboats - typically grouped together in one area.
Small boat complete with a bicycle.
A river barge anchored in the river. Notice the eyes painted on the bow.
Water reflection turned vertical.
Our destination was the tunnel complex in Củ Chi. The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several
military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong's base of operations for the Tết
Offensive in 1968.
Our guide demonstrates how the Viet Cong used small foxholes - spider-holes - for
concealment. They would drop into the hole and a cover would close the hole with grass on top making it very hard
to see.
The entrance to one of the tunnels - there are 75 miles of tunnels.
Display of unexploded bombs collected for use in booby traps.
The entrance to the section of a tunnel which a visitor can traverse. We opted out of the experience.
Demonstration of how a fire underground would be vented into a termite hill through many small openings to keep
the smoke from marking a location.
Cal and Virginia Ann on the boat taking us up and down the Saigon River. It was a fast boat and a pleasant trip.
The eyes of this river barge look like they are going to go under the water.
A small boat - there were many boats on the river of all sizes.
Homes (or hotels) along the Saigon River. We are not near Saigon.
Mỹ Hảo Church - a Catholic Church north of Saigon.
A fancy home closer to Saigon.
The site of the old U.S. Embassy in Saigon - now a U.S. Consulate General. Outside the wall is a memorial to the
Viet Cong who died during the Tet offensive attacking the embassy.
We then visited the War Remnants Museum - a museum representing the Vietnam War from the perspective of the
Vietnamese - the American War. A very interesting display of photographs curated by two British photo
journalists. The photographs are from 134 photographers who died in the Vietnam War.
We only found two
mistakes in the descriptions of military units and operations. The photo descriptions were heavily slanted from
the Vietnamese viewpoint. The propaganda in the rest of the museum was not that interesting - needs better
context.
There are several U.S. vehicles, helicopters, and aircraft on display.
The People's Committee Building (City Hall) from our hotel. We had some time before our dinner cruise, so we
headed down to check out the building and the wide plaza which went from the building to the river.
The People's Committee Building up close. The building has beautiful flower beds around the front.
The building is beautiful. The hall was built in 1902-1908 in a French colonial style by architect Paul Gardes
Ho Chi Minh statue outside the People's Committee Building.
Our dinner was on a boat that had three levels of dining - we were on the top in the open air which was very
pleasant. Cal was up and down during dinner taking pictures.
The Saigon riverfront in lights.
The Majestic Hotel from the water - the bar we were in the night before is in the upper left of the hotel.
The Bitexco Financial Tower at 68 floors is the second-tallest building in Saigon.
Vietnam's first
non-rooftop helipad is on the 52nd floor. The helipad extends 70 feet out from the main structure. It is strong
enough to carry a helicopter up to 3 tons.
Apartment buildings along the Saigon River - all the buildings along the river seemed to have lights or even a
light show.
Landmark 81 (again) from the river. The tallest building in Vietnam. Beautiful lighting.
The colorful underside of a downtown bridge in Saigon.
Trần Hưng Đạo at night from the dinner ship.
A picture down Nguyen Hue Street - the grand plaza leading from the Saigon River to the People's Committee
Building.
It was fun to wait for the direct view from the top of the dinner boat down the wide plaza.
Once back to the hotel we headed out to Nguyen Hue Street to walk the plaza to the People's Committee Building.
There were hundreds (thousands?) of people out enjoying a very pleasant evening and all the street
performers.
Just in front of the People's Committee Building is a fountain with a lotus flower.
