Today I drove from Phoenix to Lee's Ferry in preparation for the trip. Top of mind was our weight limit of 35 pounds. Typically, I travel with well over 40 pounds of camera gear, so slimming down to 35 pounds was a challenge. My camera gear came in at about 25 pounds, so I had 10 pounds for clothing and personal gear. I solved a fear of water damage for the cameras by purchasing a waterproof backpack from Ortlieb and a camera insert from Shinola, it worked perfectly - I could get my cameras out and back in before the rapids with no issues. I did have to severely limit personal gear to only one pair of shoes for water and hiking (Keens) and several items I would throw away before being weighed prior to the helicopter/plane ride at the end.

The Colorado at Navajo Bridge - looking toward Lee's Ferry. Dark clouds and rain across the desert promise great skies for the trip.

Navajo Bridge is two bridges. The original bridge erected in 1929 on the right is a pedestrian-only bridge. A new vehicular bridge, to the left, was constructed in 1994. In the background are the Vermilion Cliffs of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.

Tomorrow I will be rafting on that river - going under the bridge.

I had been in this area on a previous trip to White Pocket

While we were eating dinner the rain and sun created a beautiful rainbow near Antelope Pass to the south.

We were very excited we would see the same atmosphere on the trip in the Grand Canyon, we would not, the weather was sunny until the last day and no rainbows.
