Wednesday - 24 April 2024 - Today's river exploration was long, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. We would travel along a
small river tributary of the Ucayali River.
A village stands near the entrance to the smaller river. As we approached, several canoes launched into the water and
intercepted us. They were there expecting payment for us to proceed through their area of the river.
Some women watching our boats during the entrance fee transaction.
A full canoe moving in the village "streets".
We spotted a troop of Black-Capped Squirrel Monkeys and watched them move through the trees.
This little
monkey stops to watch the people on the boats.
One of the small monkeys moving along a tiny branch.
A White-Winged Swallow.
A couple of Scarlet Macaws in a tree. The guide said to keep watching as they would fly with all the boat activity.
Here the Scarlet Macaw leaves the tree - beautiful bird.
A bromeliad flower - some red in all the green of the jungle.
Very excited to spot a Monk Saki. This monkey can weigh up to 4 pounds - but looks a lot bigger.
This is a
male. A female was nearby, but we could not clearly see her.
The Monk Saki live high in the trees and do not come to the ground.
A juvenile Yellow-Headed Caracara.
Interesting Kapok tree and stormy sky - the day was very pleasant.
A Common Blue Damselfly near the boat.
An interesting group of butterflies in a mud bog.
The front of the Bluish-Fronted Jacamar with green and red feathers.
Metallic green back of the Bluish-Fronted Jacamar - almost like a hummingbird.
Cannonball tree produces large round fruit. The fruit is only edible when ripe, and can take up to a year to mature,
sometimes as long as 18 months.
A Chestnut Woodpecker.
Mom at our lunch stop. Our lunch is served in a small bayou from boats in the jungle under the trees.
Our picnic lunch on the water is just as good as the lunch served on the ship.
Cooked inside the leaves is a
rice and chicken dish which is convenient to eat from your lap.
Virginia Ann relaxing at lunch.
Our ship chef, Juan Diego, is preparing the lunch.
Cal enjoying time without having to wear a life jacket.
Back on the ship the skies looked more threatening.
Beautiful skies and clouds during the rainy season.
