Also in San Croce is the first fresco depicting a night scene by Gaddi - here is a picture of the fresco where an angel appears to the shepherds painted in 1338.
It was still early so we crossed the Ponte Vecchio and headed to the Pitti Place. This was the residence of the banker Luca Pitti, who drove his family to bankruptcy allowing it to be purchased by the Medici. They then built a walkway from the Palazzo Vecchio to the Uffizi over the Ponte Vecchio to the Pitti Palace.
In the Pitti Palace are several museums which we took an audio tour through the art collection. Several fine works by masters including Raphel, Caravaggio, Botticelli, Van Dyck, and Rubens among others.
We had lunch in the cafe in the Pitti Palace and then tackled the Boboli Gardens. Renaissance garden of several acres. Here are pictures from the gardens showing a wonderful fountain designed in 1576.
Then back across the river to the Uffizi - built in 1560-80 as office space for the Duke Cosimo I's Tuscan government administration. In 1581 his relatives began placing Medici artwork in the Uffizi making it the oldest art gallery in the world. We took another audio tour and probably logged our 20th mile of the day walking through great paintings - Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, Michelangelo's The Holy Family, and Titan's The Venus of Urbino to name a few. A well-earned glass of Chianti on the Uffizi rooftop cafe finished off the tour.
