Thursday, 22 February 2024 - Today we were up early again to reach the Toadstool Hoodoos for sunrise.
Pretty rock formation standing on its own in a valley which can be reached by a short hike.
We were all lined up and waiting for the sun to peek over the rocks.
An interesting yellow rock formation with a small red rock on top - amazing what nature created.
The sun just under the Toadstool.
As we headed back to Kanab we rode through some fog. At one point the sun created a "fogbow". We pulled over and piled out to
take pictures. After our first shot we loaded up and moved down the road, stopping to try again. It was fun to chase the
fogbow.
After lunch, we drove to the Coyote Buttes - South trailhead. The road in was very sandy and long - a hard 4x4 wheel drive.
A short hike in revealed very colorful rock formations.
The sandstone not only created the rock formations but ran along the ground.
Patterns of sandstone crisscrossed the rocks. During the entire trip we kept marveling of the forces which could
create the patterns in rock.
Colorful rocks - the one on the right looks like a duck on top.
The rock formation called the "Control Tower"
Swirling orange rock against the blue sky.
A rock formation called the "Witches Hat"
Here the sandstone is looks fluid - that is rock.
Several things can be seen in this huge rock.
Bands of pretty rock.
Rocks in black and white.
Bands of red rock everywhere.
A funny little round rock formation.
Close up of the colorful rock bands.
The "Southern Wave" - a taste of the colors and swirls of the "Wave" which we will see tomorrow.
This picture is not very good - but I noticed that my shadow was in the picture and I decided it was a keeper.
Interesting sandstone patterns. Small fins as hard as rock.
An old tree in the sand.
Pillow rocks like the ones I saw in
White Pocket
which is not very far from Coyote Buttes.
As the sun set the rocks turned more yellow.
We continued to the car and headed back to Kanab talking about the big hike tomorrow to the Wave.
