Saturday, 26 July 2025 Today was a scramble as a planned adventure to Kenai Fjords National Park was canceled due to high seas. I decided to drive to Seward and take in the scenery. The only planned event was a hike to Exit Glacier near Seward.

Prior to breakfast (stayed at Susitna Place B&B - great BTW) I began deleting from over 15,000 photos. It was easy. My goal was to get to 50 or less a day.

Heading down the Turnagian Arm I stopped at Bulga Point. I did not see any whales, however, some beautiful mountains. The range is the Kenai and extends along the Turnagian Arm.

The snow and rocks make great contrasts.

A stream of glacier runoff.

Continuing south on the Turnagian Arm, my next stop was Bird Point. Again beautiful mountains.

Early light hits the lingering fog in the mountain valleys.

A fun black and white of the mountains.

The snow and clouds make great contrasts.

Another black and white of the mountains and snow.

I stopped to explore Gridwood - a small town on the way. The stream flows from the glaciers in the Chugach Mountains.

On the other side of bridge the stream flows toward the Turnagian Arm and the Kenai Mountains.

I stopped to make a very short hike to Virgin Creek Falls. Beautiful.

Next stop was Portage Glacier. I stopped and took pictures of the tall mountains and their glaciers.

Beautiful Chugach National Forest mountains and glaciers all around Portage Lake.

Another mountain covered in snow.

Byron Glacier tumbles down the mountain and is accessible via a trail of about a mile..

High peak of the Chugach Mountains.

My last look at Byron Glacier.

Portage Glacier used to fill the lake valley. Now the terminus has retreated around the lake. The higher glacier is still visible, but to see the end of the glacier you need to take a boat.

A long drive to Exit Glacier.

Exit Glacier is named for serving as the exit for the first recorded crossing of the Harding Icefield in 1968.

Sadly the glacier has retreated up the valley which only 100 years it completely filled.

Zooming in on the glacier you can see the flow of ice.
alaska2025
In closer, the pressure creating waves on the ice is visible.

Finally the blue glacier ice itself - it was a fun hike and very busy with us tourists.

Across the valley from Exit Glacier was a snow-capped mountain.
