Today was mostly travel from Phoenix to Moab over some wonderful country - but sparsely populated. Up early
for an 8-hour journey - Virginia Ann made lunch so I would not have to stop on the way.
Traveling from
Phoenix to Moab I thought I would eat lunch in Monument Valley. Unfortunately the park was closed due to Covid-19
and the impact to the Navajo Nation. Unable to enter the park I pulled over to the side of the road to eat on the
back of my pickup.
This was the view for lunch. The big rock formation is called Sitting Hen - as it looks like a sitting
hen. It was not the trip through Monument Valley I was looking forward to but the vistas were still pretty from
the road.
By the time I reached Moab I did not have a lot of time before dark - I wanted to catch Mesa Arch at sunrise so I
headed out to Canyonlands to Mesa Arch to check it out in daylight.
Mesa Arch faces to the east toward the La Sal mountains. The arch is a small way from the parking lot
over an uneven path and rock. I walked it a few times to ensure I could follow it in the dark. Also moved around
the arch to determine where I wanted to set up for sunrise. This is the view I liked.
I visited a few of the Canyonlands lookouts on the way back to the hotel. The views were pretty - much like the
Grand Canyon but smaller - since it was the Colorado River at the bottom of the valley it made sense. The
Colorado is warming for the work on the Grand Canyon.
