Cal signed up for a trip to Madagascar to photograph lemurs scheduled for Spring of 2020 - the pandemic
pushed the trip to
May 2022. The trip was a photography workshop led by
Art Wolfe's team
. At the last minute Art was unable to
make the trip - he planned - due to his testing positive just prior to leaving. Fortunately his
second, Gavriel Jecan made the trip as scheduled. Gavriel had led a workshop to India which Cal joined
in 2017 (
Portraits in India 2017
).
Cal arrived 3 days early and arranged a private guide to see lemurs and test out his equipment. Using the
internet
we found Ravo Ratsimbazafy via
Tours By Locals
.
The tour was great and Ravo planned a very busy schedule with many photo opportunities - it was very helpful.
The
first three days are with Ravo. Then Cal joined the Art Wolfe tour where our local guide was Fabrice
Rakotonirina
(
email: fabrak5@gmail.com
) from
SafariWise
who was also excellent - and again anticipated our needs
to help us get great photographs. I would highly recommend either guide for a trip to Madagascar.
Below are the 19 species of lemurs Cal saw and photographed on the trip.
Lemurs are among the most threatened groups of mammals. The International Union for the Conservation of
Nature (IUCN) estimates that over 98% of lemurs face extinction in the next 20 years.
The IUCN category for each species is below the lemur's name. Keep in mind the category following "Critically
Endangered" is "Extinct".
