Monday, 17 February 2025 - Today we schedule a history of Sydney with a local teacher turned guide. It is a
walking tour, so we
easily reach our step goals before the tour is over.
We begin not far from our hotel at the Customs House.
The first Customs house in Sydney was built in 1800. Its location is presumed to be at or near the
spot of the landing and official flag raising on the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. This
event marked the foundation of New South Wales.
The Customs House, built during 1845 was used continuously for 145 years.
Royal arms of the British monarch. The coat features the motto of English monarchs, "God and my right,"
and the motto of the Order of the Garter, "shamed be whoever thinks ill of it."
Ancient stones depict the construction in the 1900s.
On this building, shell designs were incorporated as a nod to the aboriginal people living there.
Men's toilet cupola. The restroom was under this sign, below ground. It is no longer functioning.
All distances were measured from this stone marker in miles, Australia has since switched to
the metric system.
Tank Stream is the reason Sydney is where it is located today. It was a fresh water stream needed
for the colony.
Virginia Ann and Cal at the playful sculpture by Gillie and Marc. The sculpture is named "Together
They Were A Golden Couple." The sculptures have a soft spot for adventure, travel, and exploring, just
like Virginia Ann and Cal.
Another beautiful old building, now a hotel, from the 1850s.
The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States of America purchased the entire block. Erected
in
1894, this building is an early example in Australia of the American Romanesque style.
The building's atrium is full height around which are the main stairs and
lobbies. The stairs are constructed of marble supported by steel frames and serve as
both floors and ceilings. The atrium has a decorative ceiling of colored glass, and the atrium
is lined with decorative marble and bronze work.
Inside the General Post Office building. Today the post office occupies only a tiny section of the
building
and a hotel occupies the rest. Built in 1866, it is a beautiful Victorian building.
A statue of a soldier next to The Cenotaph, a focus of military commemoration for the city since 1928.
The Location for the memorial was chosen as it was the gathering place in the early 1900s and the recruiting
center for volunteers in the First World War.
The statue of Queen Victoria on the facade of the Post Office.
The Strand Arcade is a heritage-listed Victorian-style retail arcade built from 1890 to 1892.
The only remaining arcade of its kind in Sydney.
Three stories of shops with a beautiful skylight.
Queen Victoria Building (QVB) was constructed between 1893 and 1898.
Designed as a marketplace, it was used for a variety of other purposes, underwent remodeling,
and suffered decay until its restoration and return to its original use as a marketplace
in the late twentieth century.
This is the Grand Central Dome, which is accompanied by 20 other smaller domes.
The colonnades, arches, balustrades, and cupolas are typical of the intricate Victorian style.
Restored between 1984 and 1986, at a cost of $86 million, the QVB contains mostly upscale boutiques
and high-end brand shops.
The Great Australian Clock weighs four tons and stands thirty-three feet tall.
It includes 33 scenes from Australian history, seen from both Aboriginal and European perspectives.
This is a small ship that travels around the clock with its time movement.
The Grand Central Dome stained-glass high overhead.
Interesting circular staircase in one corner of the Grand Central Dome.
The building consists of four main shopping floors. The top three levels have large openings
(protected by decorative cast-iron railings) which allow natural light from the ceiling to illuminate
the lower floors. Much of the tile work, especially under the central dome, is original.
This is one of the oldest pubs.
In Australia, many pubs are called "hotels" because historically, due to liquor
licensing laws, pubs were required to provide accommodation to customers,
essentially functioning as a combination of a pub and a hotel;
even though this requirement no longer exists, the naming convention remains, so most pubs still use the
"hotel" title in their name.
The view of the Harbor Bridge and north side of Sydney from Observatory Hill Park.
We are in "the Rocks" which is the oldest part of Sydney.
The hill's history dates back to 1796, when it was the site of the first windmill in the colony.
Sydney Observatory built between 1857 and 1859.
It remains a working weather station and observatory.

Dawes Point Battery looking over the entrance to Sydney Harbor.
The first known building to be constructed on the site was an observatory constructed in
early 1788, by Lieutenant William Dawes, of the Royal Marines.
The first guns came from HMS Sirius, which wrecked at Norfolk Island the year
before. A dispute in 1790, between Spain and Britain, led to fear of a
Spanish attack, and motivated the project.

Campbell's Stores is a former warehouse building built from 1850 to 1861.
Robert Campbell was born in Scotland and went to India in 1798, to join his elder
brother in the Calcutta business partnership of Campbell and Co. The firm
sent a speculative cargo to Sydney Cove in 1796. The family controlled land near this
spot for several generations.

Sydney, built in 1816, for the use of the governmental coxswains and their crews.
