This part of the site started as an experiment in the use of the Digester - a utility in the Struts project and JDOM. Both allow a programmer to read and write XML streams.
From O'Riley.net "RSS (RDF [or Rich] Site Summary) is an application of XML (eXtensible Markup Language). In essence, RSS is a file format that uses XML. It can be created easily by hand or by any web content management system. The RSS core file defines a "channel." Surrounding this core file are a number of tools, services, and protocols that, while not strictly RSS, extend the power of this simple format to the point where it can compete with many high-priced commercial content-sharing and syndication systems."
We serve RSS too. The link is to a RSS .91 formated feed and is to a RSS 1.0 (RDF) formated file. If you want to hook up CalAndVA.com just point your RSS reader to these links:
http://www.calandva.com/holmansite/do/rss/CreateRssFile?type=rss91
http://www.calandva.com/holmansite/do/rss/CreateRssFile?type=rdf
Additionally CalAndVA.com has chosen a few of the thousands of RSS Channels that interest us - so if our interest are inline with yours this is a pretty good utility. With the News link you can see either a default set of channels or using the Settings link set up a custom page (you must be using cookies for this to work). For a complete list of the channels use the Channel List link.
Another feature of calandva.com is the ability to have a daily email sent to you with the items your are most interested. Comming to calandva.com each day is not reasonable further the channel items are not dated so you cannot filter by day. So when you view the channels you see items posted weeks ago depending on the activity of the channel. The Email Options link lets you specify a set of search terms for us to scan the channels and your email address. There is a couple of test links to see if your search terms spot anything in the current set of Channels or a test using only the current day items.
